Five Common Enterprise Image Viewer Issues, and How to Get Ahead of Them

Most of the issues that slow a diagnostic image viewer down are predictable, and most are preventable. Across the imaging teams we work with, the same handful of themes come up again and again, and almost none of them are really about the viewer. They are about the environment around it: expired certificates, drifted configuration, old versions, and upstream integration changes.
Here are the five that generate the most questions, and what stops each one turning into downtime.
1. Certificates and secure access
Expired security certificates are one of the leading reasons users suddenly cannot log in or open studies, and they usually expire overnight or on a weekend, when no one is watching. Certificate expiry is on a known date, so there is no reason to be surprised by it.
The cadence that works:
- Set calendar reminders at 60, 30 and 7 days before every expiry.
- Loop your vendor in at the 60-day mark, so a replacement can be prepared in the right format.
- Renew at around 30 days rather than waiting for the deadline.
- Re-test login and image retrieval immediately after any renewal.
2. Smooth study and image viewing
Here is the one we see most often. A new modality comes online, its compression settings get missed, and it starts pushing uncompressed data across the network for no clinical reason. Reading feels slow, and nothing about the viewer has changed. A configuration check finds it in minutes.
When viewing feels slow or a study does not hang the way a reader expects, the cause usually traces to hanging protocols, display configuration, a missing DICOM object or an unusually large study. Validate hanging protocols for each modality you use, and keep a small set of known-good test studies so you can check behavior quickly after any change.
3. Getting more from the tools you already have
A large share of the questions imaging teams raise are really "how do I" questions, and the capability is usually already in the viewer waiting to be set up. Measurement calibration and saved hanging protocols are the two settings that save readers the most time per study.
Save one standard preference profile and share it, so new users start from a strong baseline rather than building their own. And if you find yourself wishing your viewer did something, ask your vendor before you look for a workaround. There is a good chance it already does.
4. Staying current
Upgrades carry fixes, performance gains and security patches. Running an older version often means living with a problem a newer release already solved.
Run every upgrade twice: once in a non-production environment, once in production, using the same validation script both times. Review the release notes first so you know what changed, and schedule the window on your terms rather than waiting for a problem to force one. If you are unsure what has changed since your current version, ask your vendor to walk you through it before you plan the move.
5. Integrations: Epic, PACS and SSO
Many issues that look like a viewer problem are an upstream change to an endpoint, a URL, or a certificate somewhere else in the environment.
One rule covers most of it: change one thing at a time, then validate. It makes any issue far easier to trace. Beyond that, re-validate launches after any endpoint or certificate change, and keep a test integration path you can check safely. An integration validation checklist tailored to your environment gives everyone a shared map of what is connected to what.
The habits that prevent most of it
- Track certificate expiry dates and renew early.
- Keep known-good test studies for quick validation.
- Stay on a current, supported version.
- Change one thing at a time, then validate.
