Burnout is not new, but it is accelerating
Five decades after it was first named, occupational burnout remains a systemic threat to organizational health, employee wellbeing, and the quality of care patients receive.
Since 2016, academic study of radiologist burnout has grown alongside radiologists reporting higher levels of burnout themselves. The pandemic did not create the trend. It accelerated one that was already underway.
Healthcare workers are disproportionately affected compared with other industries, and radiology sits near the front of that group. This paper looks at the two responses that dominate the conversation, artificial intelligence and the shift to remote or hybrid reading, and at what each one actually changes.
